Wellspring Hiking and Nature Club
Homeschoolers of all ages are invited to join us every week this spring and summer for a fun time of easy hiking and nature observation right here in Richmond!
Who: Homeschoolers of all ages are welcome! Ages 10 and up may be dropped off. Children under 10 need an adult to stay onsite. Teens (13+) may be allowed to hike as a group without adult supervision.
What: Relaxed-pace trek over 2.5 miles of gentle trails through a nature-filled area right here in Richmond. Some areas of the trail have mild to moderate slope, but all of the trails would be easy enough for beginners. We won’t necessarily cover the entire 2.5 miles of trail at a time -- there will be ample opportunities for stopping to observe the plants, animals and insects we encounter. Nature and wildlife games and activities will be included. We plan to walk for about an hour, coming back to the trailhead which is beside a shallow stream and bridge. At that time, if anyone wishes to stay longer to wade and explore the stream (with parental supervision), that will be an option.

When: Thursdays from 2:00-3:00 (with option to stay longer; parents who drop off older children are required to be back onsite by 3:00). We will begin in June and plan to meet each Thursday, weather-permitting, through August. All cancellations and updates will be provided on the group's Band page by noon on Thursdays.
Bring: sunscreen, bug spray, water, towel if you plan to wade. Be prepared for heavy mud! Some sections of the trail tend to get swampy and you will get muddy! There is no running water onsite but a porta-john is available. Bring a phone if you wish to follow the trail using Google Maps satellite view (not required).
We hope to visit a few other hiking areas throughout the summer months! Watch for future posts regarding these opportunities.
