Who Can Participate?
This group is open to all home school students in fourth grade and up. As our group grows, we will split into two groups according to age. You do NOT have to participate in co-op to participate in the vocal performance group.
Who is the director?
Vicky Welch is the director.
Vicky Welch has been involved with music performance for over 40 years. She received her training at Kentucky Christian University (college when she was there) where she also traveled with the choir. As an adult, she continues to hone her craft through private classical voice and theory training from Phyllis Jenness of Lexington.
Vicky has led worship and has been a soloist for many churches, events, and other venues in our area. She has also taught and sung at Church of the Harvest in Mt. Sterling, Pathways Christian in Lexington, the 2000 Christian Leadership Conference in Versailles, and other events. Other accomplishments include serving as part of the backstage team at the World Equestrian Games and as stage manager for Night to Honor Israel at UK Singletary Center for the Arts, where she also participated in the worship presentation. Most recently, she sang at Tates Creek Baptist Church in Richmond and taught classes at CHC and BRICC home school co-ops in Lexington, as well as Wellspring's co-op in Richmond.
Mrs. Welch's heart is to bringand to love and encourage others to achieve excellence in their performing arts experience. She lives in Richmond with her husband Mike Welch and son Brian, an accomplished musician and vocalist.
What are the goals of this group?
• To give students an opportunity to use their gifts and talents.
• To give students an opportunity to improve and expand their vocal and stage performance skills.
• To share with other home school families and our community the blessings and encouragement of music.
• To build each year a creative and wholesome performance experience for our students.
What is the cost to participate?
The cost to participate is $30 per semester. If you also participate in co-op or academic classes, there is an additional $40 fee for use of the facility. If you only participate in choir, this fee is waived.
What type of music can participants expect to sing?
Mrs. Welch uses a wide variety of musical styles including: musical theater numbers, Christian music, contemporary songs, folk songs, etc. She also plans on introducing simple choreography to some of the musical theater numbers. As students grow in their abilities, they will be given the opportunity to sing solo and duet portions during some of the songs.
When and where are practices held?
Practices are held at the First United Methodist Church at the corner of Main Street and Lancaster Ave. in Richmond. We will meet in the Multi-Ministry Center building behind the church on Mondays from 3:00 to 4:30. A mandatory organizational meeting will be held before the beginning of the fall semester. At this meeting, choir members will get acquainted, receive their initial sheet music, and become familiar with new songs. Details regarding dates and times will be sent to those who register.
When and where are performances held?
This choir performs during co-op assemblies twice each year (once at the end of each semester). Also, throughout the year the choir travels to a variety of outside venues (retirement homes, VA hospitals, festivals, etc.) in the Central Kentucky area.
Can students participate in choir if they do not want to perform at outside venues?
Yes, students may participate in choir and perform during co-op assemblies, but opt NOT to travel to outside choir performances. However, special parts and solos will be given to students willing and able to perform at outside venues.
Will other singers perform with the choir at outside venues?
Yes, when the choir travels to outside performances, additional private voice students will join the choir as needed to round out the overall program and make a fuller sound for the choir, giving the audience the most enjoyable experience possible.
Will my child have a solo part?
Solos and special parts are assigned throughout the year based on student attendance, vocal ability and the appropriateness of the song for the individual. Typically, any given special part or solo will be learned by several choir members and assigned to specific singers for specific performances.
What do choir members wear?
Choir members wear black pants or skirts (knee-length or longer), black shoes, black socks or hose, and a seasonal-colored top. Typically, shirts/tops are red during the fall and winter months and pastel during the spring and summer.
Are there other supplies need for choir?
Choir members will be assigned folders which they will need to bring to rehearsal each week, along with a pencil. Also, members will need to bring in a blank CD, as assigned by Mrs. Welch. Occasionally the choir uses props, and any assistance pulling these together is appreciated.
Simply email Ms. Welch at firstname.lastname@example.org AND at email@example.com. Please send the name(s) of parents and student(s) with all pertinent contact information including the ages of the students to both emails.
